Dana Lixenberg

Dana Lixenberg (born 1964) is a Dutch photographer and filmmaker. She lives and works in New York and Amsterdam. Lixenberg pursues long-term projects on individuals and communities on the margins of society. She collaborates with a variety of the most important magazines such as Vibe, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Newsweek and The Telegraph magazine amongst many other. Among her books are: United States (Aritmo, 2001), Jefferson-Ville Indiana (Aritmo, 2005) The Last Days on Shishmaref (Episode Publishing, 2009), Set Amsterdam (Roma Publications 2011), Imperial Courts: 1993-2015 (Roma Publications, 2015) and Tupac-Biggie (Roma Publications 2018).

Lixenberg’s work has been widely exhibited and can be found in collections worldwide. In 2017 she won the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize for her publication Imperial Courts (Roma, 2015). This series – whose first comprehensive exhibition was on view from December 12, 2015 to March 6, 2016 at the Museum Huis Marseille in Amsterdam and included a video and audio installation  – started in 1993 and continued throughout 2015. Already back in 1993, through the incredibly beautiful portraits, Lixenberg started collaborating with magazines and was awarded a project grant by the Fonds BKVB – which was the start of a successful career.
