20.12.53 – 10.08.04 is a body of work made by Moira Ricci between 2004 and 2014. It shows 50 photographs of the artist’s mother that Ricci has digitally manipulated, adding her own presence.

Photography shows all its power, becoming an instrument for the realisation of an unrealisable desire.

Roberta Valtorta writes in her text accompanying the book: “A process of possessing Loriana’s entire life will occur, from birth to death, as the title of the work declares. And for this to be true to the end, Moira would dress, comb her hair, do her make-up, and pose attentively in the ways required by the trends of the various eras of her mother’s life(…). It is only in this way, and only after much work, that the fiction, the falsification, will (…) become the truth, as Cindy Sherman (…)”

The book is designed by the artist herself. The images have been sequenced spontaneously and the extremely simple layout reminds of a family album. The images, in color and in black and white according to the original photograph, are accompanied by short meaningful captions that recall various life events.

20.12.53 – 10.08.04 is a very intimate artist book. Its simplicity and visual strength engage the viewer in a story that belongs to Moira Ricci – of course – but to all of us as well.

Curated by Roberta Valtorta, the project has been awarded the PAC2021 – Plan for Contemporary Art, promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
The book is realised by the Museum of Contemporay Photography.
