Valerie Galloway is a contemporary Tucson artist. Born in France, she studied photography at the University of Arizona and currently works in photography, painting, and mixed media.

The toned silver gelatin photographs, sometimes hand-colored, demonstrate her disparate styles and remind of the voyeurism of Eugene Atget, the inexplicability of Man Ray, and the furtive aimlessness of the French New Wave. They capture both fleeting French cultural references and timeless desert topographical references, each paying homage to the surrealists of the 1930s.

When publisher Chris Pichler discovered her works, it was love at first sight – some time later, a coffee-colored silk bound book was released by Nazraeli Press, bearing the oneiric title “Rêver Dans le Désert”. For the event in Milan, Valerie Galloway has created a very limited series of photographic objects that will accompany the exhibition of the framed artworks.

Here, two photography jewelry pendants. Each pendant is constructed with a toned and/or miniature hand painted gelatin silver print that Galloway made in the darkroom.

And of course, a Nazraeli Press pop-up will accompany the exhibition – from the most recent publications (among these, Sage Sohier, Todd Hido and Mark Steinmetz) to rare and limited edition publications.

The pages reveal a sequence of 33 photographs that appear almost magically on the dark pages, like frames of a dream, or even, like a counterpart to some Yamamoto Masao‘s publications, arranged on the pages as if following the rhythm of a meditation.

The book, beautifully printed on natural textured art paper, with contrasting linen spine, has been released in a limited edition of 500 copies to coincide with solo exhibitions of the artist’s work in Tokyo (Akio Nagasawa Gallery Aoyama) and in Milan at Micamera, where Pichler will curate the site specific installation in collaboration with Micamera.
