Diane Dufour, Founder and Co-Director of LE BAL, Paris
workshop on March 23 and 24, 2024

When Diane Dufour founded LE BAL with Raymond Depardon in 2010 our relationship with the image was changing and we were becoming, at the same time, producers, consumers and curators of images. Among the most innovative space proposals, LE BAL offered a welcoming, prolific and visionary harbour for all kinds of theoretical and creative projects.

In this two-day workshop, Dufour will talk about how a former dance room was turned into an independent platform for exhibitions, publications, ideas and education, centered on innovative contemporary visual langages in photography, video, film and new media. The group will also discuss new trends in the field of experimental documentary photography today and innovative approaches to visual literacy.

Each participant will be asked to prepare some material before the worshop and will have the possibility to show one project

Third appointment in the ‘Curating Photography’ series, after the workshops led by David Campany and Alona Pardo.

This collection (The missing images – What can an image do? – The lasting images …) explores the issues at stake in our image-based civilisation through never-published contributions by artists, historians, anthropologists and image practitioners.

Ten years ago, she initiated the Curators’day, an annual project platform for 30 European photography and art museums. She was the European Director of Magnum Photos from 2000 to 2007.
