Ilaria Turba is a visual artist using photography, video and animation as privileged media for the creation of works, installations, site specific projects and communication projects. Her works are the result of a peculiar practice that interweaves visual experimentation with other disciplines: social sciences, performing arts and oral history, often in collaboration with other artists, craftsmen and professionals.
Her work deals with identity and collective imagination, relationship between present and memory through objects, photographs, stories and places. Her projects have been presented in museums, theatres and festivals in Italy and abroad: Centre Pompidou, Paris (FR); Castello di Rivoli, Turin (I); Brooklyn Children’s Museum, New York (US); Museo della Triennale, Milan (I); Museo Fotografia Contemporanea, Milan (I); Museo Diffuso della Resistenza, Turin (I); m.a.x. museum, Chiasso (CH); Festival Filosofia di Modena (I); Festival Videoformes, Clermont-Ferrand (FR); Festival Fotografia Europea, Reggio Emilia (I).
Her first monograph JEST was released 2016 by Berlin-based imprint Peperoni Books and has been featured in “How We See: Photobooks by Women”, book edited by 10×10 Photobooks (NYC, US) – nominated for the 2019 Photo-Aperture Photobook Awards. JEST was presented as a solo exhibition in January 2018 at the museum Atelier in Nantes (FR).
Ilaria Turba is associated artist at Le ZEF, Marseille’s national theatre since September 2018. Her interdisciplinary project “Le désir de regarder loin”, dealing with the places and the communities of the northern districts of Marseille, has been selected for MANIFESTA13 and will be exhibited at the MUCEM Museum in Marseille in June 2021.
JEST will be exhibited in Milan at Casa Testori in fall 2020 – curated by Giulia Zorzi.
Turba won the Italian Council Awardfor the exhibition Le désir de regarder loin produced by LE ZEF – scène nationale de Marseille, opening at Mucem, museum in Marseille, in June 2021
