101 tragedies by Enrique Metidines is a selection of 101 key images of crime scenes and incidents in Mexico for local newspapers and “notas rojas” (or red pages, for their blood content).
Next to each image, extensive captions provide Metinides’ account of the situation portrayed: the life and characters on the streets, the criminals, the heroism of the rescuers, and the sadness of the grieving families. Thirty of the selected photographs are paired with the original newspaper sheets, preserved by the author, whose typography inspired the design of this book.
The images in the book were collected by Trisha Ziff, a filmmaker and editor who knows Metinides well and contributes an essay here on his life, work and personality.
