MARK STEINMETZ (Athens, 1961)
Atlanta, April 1994 (from Greater Atlanta)
An image from Greater Atlanta, the book that completes Steinmetz’s powerful South trilogy. Photographing in Atlanta and its outlying regions, Steinmetz provides his testimony to contemporary American civilization. Combining portraits and landscapes, he weaves a symbolic and lyrical investigation that subtly questions the notion of progress, developing motifs that were first introduced in South Central and South East.
A keen pictorial sense of composition and an incredible sensitivity allow Mark Steinmetz to play with light and shadow, transforming people, gestures, landscapes and objects into images with a strong symbolic, emotional and aesthetic charge. His images are collective visions that we inhabit.
Greater Atlanta was first released in 2009 and then reprinted in 2020 by Nazraeli Press
Steinmetz lives and works in Athens, Georgia, where he is co-director of the photograhy project space The Humid
