Between 1974 and 1993 a total of 2,850,000 Volvo 240s were produced, securing its place as the most popular car in the Nordic countries and becoming a symbol for these areas.
In those days, owning a Volvo 240 was synonymous with safety, with commonplace. Square, yet familiar, it was a solid and reliable car that put functionality before form, leaving no room for frills. It was THE machine, ambassador of the Scandinavian social democratic concept.

Following these shining years and with the advent of liberalism and postmodernism, the Volvo 240 fell victim to the new times. Everyone began to seek uniqueness and the ‘common car’ was no longer contemplated.

Despite this modernisation process, 17,000 Volvo 240s were still registered as being on the roads in Northern Europe as of 2012.

Helge Skovin photographed these cars as he found them. Parked in front of a house, in a private street, in a car park, inside a garage, on the side of a street, in a courtyard area… In situations that can be defined as the natural habitats of a car.
In this series of photographs, the way of life is represented, the desire to portray the landscape of everyday life as neutrally as possible, always incorporating an exceptional subject.
