This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition A Brand New End: Survival and Its Pictures by Carmen Winant, presented at The Print Center April in Philadelphia, July 2022 Winant does not take photographs: her work typically draws on archives of images, which the artist reworks and recomposes, giving them new meaning. In this case, the archives belong to two historical organisations fighting violence against women: Women in Transition (WIT) and National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

Highlighting the power of the printed image, Winant explores the dual power of photography, which on the one hand conditions the way women see themselves, while on the other can become a powerful tool in their hands – to gain autonomy and determine how they are represented.

The exhibition and the book represent a unique and significant collaboration between artist and social organisations: the work reveals the strategies of organisation and resistance that feminists have deployed over time and perhaps invites us to pick up where they left off.
