If Cartier-Bresson’s decisive moment reflects a situation that is perfectly attuned to the photographer’s intuition, impeccably combining compositional elements and timing, then Ed Kashi’s abandoned moment is the result of an imprecise rendering. This collection of photographs, taken over a period of 40 years, reveals imprecise glimpses of transient events full of frenetic energy – the chaos of everyday life. Embodying the inherent power of photography, they preserve moments that can never be repeated in exactly the same time and space. When geometry, mood and possibility combine to unintentionally create something new, the magical and imaginary qualities of still photography capture the unplanned essence of existence. In contrast to my journalistic approach of deep personal connection and acute observation, this work aims to capture the wild energy of a moment with abandon.
