A reference for documentary photography, the Italian edition of ‘Altre Americhe’ contains original texts by Claude Nori, who recounts the genesis of the book, Sebastião Salgado, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, and Alan Riding’s introduction to the American edition.
Published for the first time in 1986 by the publisher Contrejour under the title “Autres Ameriques”, this volume brings together a series of photographs resulting from Salgado’s numerous trips to Latin America, between 1977 dil 1984: a corpus of images recounts with great evocative power the persistence of peasant and Indian cultures in those lands. The intensity of the black and white photographs, their plastic power, and the layout designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado with most of the images double-page spreads, decreed the success of the project. The book received the Premier Livre Photo, and was a major publishing event.
