“In the endless flow of our lives, people come and go. And while the presence of some can be so subtle that we hardly notice when it begins or when it ends, with others it is much clearer: they enter or leave with an incident.”
In Borders of Nothingness, Dutch photographer Margaret Lansink explores the ambiguity of her adult daughter’s decision to suspend all contact with her, imagining ephemeral spaces in which the question “Is this the moment you left?” reverberates.
As the author and her daughter tried to mend their relationship, this moment of renegotiation found its way into the work, taking the form of gold leaf, inspired by the Japanese method of repairing broken ceramics.
Gold becomes balm in the hopefully fruitful attempt to mend emotional wounds. The intention is to create a connection ‘stronger and more beautiful than the one that was once broken’.
