“Canary” combines myths with stories, memories, and personal experiences of ordinary people, resulting in far-fetched images full of symbolism, hovering between dreamlike and real.
Shiga’s images are constructed and staged with reference to the Japanese folk tradition, which is deeply rooted in the supernatural. Bursting with colour and characterised by a certain dark disquiet, the photographs trace a path through the world of the author’s personal fantasies, while delving into the universality of human fears and fascinations.
