Through long journeys lasting more than 20 years, Bertrand Meunier, a member of the Tendance Floue collective, conducted a photographic study of China, a nation that has experienced galloping growth since the 2000s.
This monograph is the culmination of a long-term project that began with the series ‘Erased’ in 1998, which focused on the changes in China’s rural and industrial world, followed by ‘REC’, which chronicled the aspects of excessive surveillance inherent in Chinese society, culminating in the recent protests in Hong Kong in 2019.

The choice of black and white and the contrasting tones testify to a universe that is at once harsh, poetic and tormented, in line with the author’s vision of the evolution of Chinese society.
Meunier paints an uncompromising picture of China’s north-eastern regions, where social transformations are exacerbating inequalities; through the study of this territory in crisis, the photographer questions our future, both in China and elsewhere.
