Falkland Road is a notorious street of prostitutes in Bombay. These cover all ages, from 11 to 65. It is a street lined with old two-storey wooden buildings. On the ground floor, women can be observed, showing off for customers. From dawn to dusk they are monitored. Mary Ellen Mark’s work, published in 1981, has long been recognised as one of her major works. The book contains 65 photographs, taken over the course of six weeks. An astonishing description of a raw and terrifying world.
