A 20-year-old Scianna was interested in the religious festivals in Sicily and the peasant world around him and the events that arose from it, perhaps due to his anthropological studies. It is a book that starts out to be the author’s university thesis and instead resolves itself as the birth of a passion first, and a job later: to tell the world regardless of scientific-anthropological intentions.
They are photos with great documentary value as they tell the story of what was the popular world of the 1960s.

The texts are by Sciascia, a writer to whom Ferdinando Scianna gives credit for steering him in the right direction: photography.
