Josef Sudek had his right hand amputated due to wounds received during the First World War.
This disability did not prevent him from becoming one of the most famous and active Czech photographers of his period.

Upon his death in 1976, an impressive archive containing over 20,000 negatives and 40,000 prints was found. Broadly speaking, his style developed over the years from Pictorialism to Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity).
The subjects of his images range from poetic street views to nudes, portraits, romantic landscapes and still lifes. Sudek was constantly devoted to research, experimentation, discovering the new and collecting new images.

Josef Sudek ‘Photographs’ is a small format book beautifully printed in gravure. These days it is still a challenge to find a copy with a good dust jacket.
