Flour, water and salt. These are the only ingredients that make up what is known as ‘hardtack’: a food from the Civil War era, long associated with overland migrations because of its very long shelf life.
Drawing on this food as a metaphor for the resilience of African-American culture and traditions, Hardtack reveals the roots that link Fortune’s personal stories to the conflicts and nuances associated with post-emancipation America.

A significant theme of the work is Fortune’s interest in traditional rites of passage to adulthood. Within the book, whose sequence weaves powerful portraits with evocative landscape photographs, young bullfighters, praise dancers and beauty queens inherit and embrace these forms of community ritual, carrying on centuries-old traditions.
Fortune’s discerning eye pays tribute to the rigour, discipline and creative flair of these cultural performances, along with the intergenerational conversation between the young and the old, through which these traditions are passed on.
The result of a decade of work, Hardtack represents an important new chapter in the history of photographic documentation of the American South.
