The Hattfabriken/Luckenwalde project was born when Gerry Johansson was commissioned to take a portrait of Dick Bengtsson, who in the 1960s had painted the famous diptych Hat and Cap Factory, based on a factory in modernist architecture in Luckenwalde, an industrial town south of Berlin.

Johansson’s work is an accurate documentation of the architectural details of this building, surrounded by photographs of other places and structures that reflect the history of the factory and the tumultuous political period from 1920 to the present.
