Justine Kurland, known for her photographs of utopian American landscapes and communities on the margins, has spent much of the past 12 years on the road, following the lineage of Robert Frank, Stephen Shore and Joel Sternfeld. Her work examines the history of America, along with the idea of the American dream put in relation to reality.
Emerging in the photographs is a deep interest in the street, escape routes, and different ways of living than traditional values.
Accompanying the artist in these wanderings is her son, Casper, who appears at different ages within the work and is symbolic of the balances that incur within the life of a mother-artist: the need for routine and the desire for freedom and surprise.
