Michael Kenna’s photographs have always been described as mysterious, elegant and incredibly beautiful, qualities that can also be attributed to the Japanese landscape. The photographs in Kenna’s important new monograph, Japan, are the result of an ideal juxtaposition of artist and subject. Since his first exhibition in Japan, Kenna has had a large following in the country. His numerous exhibitions and publications in Japan have provided him with ample opportunities to visit and photograph the country. In recent years, when the project began to take shape, Kenna’s travels have become more frequent and intense. The resulting images are stunning. Superbly printed in trichrome, Japan is hardcover, bound in red cloth and presented in a Japanese folding case. The texts, in Japanese and English, are by Kotaro Iizawa.
