On the occasion of the retrospective, hosted in the rooms of the Fundación MAPFRE, a catalogue is published presenting the artistic research of Lee Friedlander, one of the most influential photographers of our time and certainly one of the masters of 20th century American photography. Since the 1960s, Friedlander has been a tireless chronicler of his world and its contemporaneity, using sophisticated and innovative photography to express unusual or perfectly ordinary aspects of everyday life. Friedlander, who had started working as a photographer at an early age, began to attract attention in the early 1960s when he joined the community of New York photographers: Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus. Photographers were to play an important role in the development of photography in the 1970s and spread their influence throughout the world in the following decade.
