Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at LE BAL (Paris)-curated by Diane Dufour and Mei Asakura (curator of the Ishimoto Yasuhiro Photo Center)- Lines and Bodies traces the artistic production of Yasuhiro Ishimoto (1921-2012).
Considered an outsider by most of his fellow photographers, Ishimoto is known for bringing a formalist perspective to the Japanese photographic scene of the 1960s. Street scenes, billboards, building facades in working-class neighborhoods-his images come across as very “American,” suggesting the influence of such authors as Walker Evans, W. Eugene Smith, Robert Frank, and Aaron Siskind.

The volume, which focuses on the early decades of Ishimoto’s work, includes an introduction by Diane Dufour and a critical apparatus consisting of three texts (including one by Mei Asakura) that examine the artist’s influence in the various territories to which he was linked.
