‘L’isola delle pescatrici’ is the story of Fosco Maraini, who lived on the island of Hèkura for a long time. On the tiny Japanese island lives a small community of ‘ama’, man-sea and woman-sea, who support themselves through fishing. During the day, while the men gather with nets and fishing boats, the women dive naked to depths of 25 metres in search of shellfish, seafood and edible algae. Here, Fosco Maraini shot a film documentary; in this book, using text, maps, underwater and other photographs, he tells us about this singular experience.
