This monograph brings together for the first time the entire output of Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase in 26 series. Present are: the series dedicated to his father (Memories of Father); along with those on cats – also his own -Sasuke; and the famous self-portraits taken alone in the bathtub, with a waterproof camera (‘Bukubuku’) or in pairs (‘Berobero’) with their tongues touching, which he then coloured.

Essays by Simon Baker, director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, and Tomo Kosuga, director of the Masahisa Fukase archives, accompany Fukase’s complex and multifaceted oeuvre, at times as ironic as it is provocative. The volume was released on the occasion of the exhibition Private Scenes at FOAM Amsterdam in 2018.
