Megalith-Still is Mimi Plumb’s search for the sublime within the untamed American landscape.
Every summer, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the author used to travel to the wildly bucolic area of Kings Canyon in search of the same herd of horses; the result of these close encounters is contained within the pages of this publication, at once delicate and powerful.

“I am in a meadow in the Sierra Nevada. The channels of the San Joaquin River weave through the thick, lush grass. I take off my shoes and socks, roll up my trousers and walk through the shallow water to where the horses are eating. They trace a kind of pattern, mysterious to me, around the meadow, eating, drinking and sleeping.
In the late afternoon, the horses abruptly leave the meadow in single file. I run after them but cannot catch up. When I get to the edge of the main riverbank, I see the last of the horses carefully enter the deep, rushing water.”
