The dystopian vision of the city of Hong Kong, as depicted by Michael Wolf in his book ‘Architecture of Density’, does not leave much room for hope. There are no vanishing lines, there is no horizon and even the sun struggles to illuminate the facades of the huge buildings transformed into graphic suggestions. There is no connection to reality, and the human presence can only be sensed by exploring the microscopic details of each striking image. One is reminded of Ridley Scott’s 1982 film ‘Blade Runner’, which depicted a futuristic city of Los Angeles, largely inhabited by citizens of Asian origin and organised like a huge beehive of dubious livability. “Architecture of Density” was originally part of another book entitled “Hong Kong Inside Outside”, which is now a collectors’ item and consists of two volumes: one referring to the outside of the buildings and the other to their interior where, almost surprisingly, one discovers the existence of life and an apparent normal everyday life.
