‘Om (Mother)is a participatory photography project by Barbara Debeuckelaere and women from eight families in Tel Rumeida in Hebron, Palestine. Besides Jerusalem, Hebron is the only place in the West Bank where Israeli settlers live in the heart of a Palestinian city. Here, small Israeli settlements divide historic neighborhoods into guarded sectors with checkpoints, severely restricting Palestinian residents’ freedom of movement. Since only 2 percent of the population of the Old City is Israeli, tensions in this divided society regularly escalate. In ‘Om (Mother), Palestinian women in Tel Rumeida reclaim their authority by using photography to document their lives, their homes and their surroundings, showing their perseverance to continue living their daily lives despite being under occupation.
