‘Pictures for Charis’ is a project born out of Kelli Connell’s obsession with the writer Charis Wilson, Edward Weston’s companion, model and collaborator during one of the most productive periods of his storied career. Connell focuses on the legacy shared by Wilson and Weston, travelling with his own partner, Betsy Odom, to the places where the latter couple took photographs together more than eighty years ago. Chasing the ghost of Charis Wilson, Connell tells his own story, which finds an affinity with Wilson and, to his surprise, also with Weston, as he navigates his own struggles as an artist in a cultural landscape that has changed and yet remains mired in many of the same thorny questions regarding the nature of desire and inspiration and the relationship between artist and landscape. The book represents Connell’s first work combining image and text as a mode of visual research and storytelling.
