This is the latest book project by renowned photographer and filmmaker Fan Ho, consisting of previously unpublished images from his huge archive of negatives.
The sequence takes us on a journey across Hong Kong Island from west to east, characterised by a photographic language closer to documentary photography than his earlier, more graphic and aesthetically sophisticated approach to street photography.
In his manifesto ‘Thoughts on Street Photography’, from which carefully selected quotes can be found throughout the book, the author states: ‘My most realistic street photos are rarely chosen. Pictorial aesthetics and images with a hint of humour are still the most popular, but I expect this to change soon. In the meantime, I will keep trying’.

In 2015, Fan Ho’s last dream began to materialise: the author selected around 500 old negatives from his archive, cropping them in his signature style. After the unfortunate event of his passing, it took another year to complete the project with the help of his family and Sarah Greene.
In addition to the pictures, the book begins with a touching preface written by John Woo about his personal encounters with Fan Ho. The book also includes an essay by Professor Joseph Fung. Fan Ho’s colourful life is summarised by Sarah Greene in biographical notes accompanying multiple conversations and recordings with the artist.
This is Fan Ho’s latest director’s cut. May this journey bring us all some good old memories of the Hong Kong of yesteryear.
