For all of us, blinded by the fragments of billions of artificial lights (or ALAN: Artificial Light At Night), the night sky has become a dirty canvas, an unknown phenomenon. 83% of the world’s population has never seen the Milky Way, the galaxy we call home. And in cities like Shanghai, where the largest astronomy museum in the world recently opened, ninety-five percent of the stars are now invisible to the naked eye.

Public lighting, windows, street lamps and even LED headlights emit blue spectrum light that dazzles the nocturnal ecosystem and damages the human circadian cycle, our endocrine interaction of sleep and wakefulness, favoring the simultaneous onset of diseases such as breast and prostate cancer, diabetes and depression. Epidemiologists agree in considering the disappearance of the night as a risk factor on a par with pollution, alcohol and smoking. We call on the Commission to put in place an ambitious plan to significantly reduce the use of artificial outdoor light by 2030,” the European Parliament wrote with alarm in its document entitled Biodiversity Strategy 2030: Bringing nature back into our lives.

There is not only light on Earth but also up there: the proliferation of telecommunications satellites creates false cosmic streaks that prevent astronomers from studying the celestial vault. And natural life itself seems to have been hit hard: migratory birds deviate from their route, the leaves of plants no longer sense the arrival of winter and many insects risk extinction: this is why defending the darkness represents the avant-garde in ecological battle underway to avert the apocalypse.

Protege Noctem is a documentation project that recounts the unofficial alliance between scientists and citizens to combat the disappearance of the night and its creatures. God, protect the sparkle of infinity, wherever it may be.

The project was realised in collaboration with Raffaele Panizza, journalist and author.
