Born in Switzerland in 1924, naturalised French in 1995 and passed away at the age of 97 on 28 December 2021, Sabine Weiss lived and worked for over seventy years in her home in Paris, which was also home to her archive. Never anecdotal, the great photographer always tried to portray small gestures in her shots, immortalising emotions and feelings, in line with the approach of French humanist photography. “Unlike Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau, Brassaï or Izis,” emphasises curator Virginie Chardin, “Sabine Weiss does not construct her images like a painting or a scene, neither metaphorically to defend a point of view or to pass a message in the form of allusion. Her shots descend from an intimate experience, a spontaneous and intuitive impulse towards the subject’. Weiss approached photography at a very young age thanks to the Boissonnas and from the mid-1940s became Willy Maywald’s assistant, specialising in fashion and portraiture. In the 1950s, she began her career as an independent photographer and, together with her husband, the American painter Hugh Weiss, frequented other artists, sculptors and musicians including Braque, Chagall, Giacometti, Niki de Saint Phalle and Utrillo. The book traces the photographer’s entire career, from reportages for the most important and popular magazines of the time, such as The New York Times Magazine, Life, Newsweek, Vogue, Paris Match, Esquire, to portraits of artists, from fashion to street shots with a focus on children’s faces, to her numerous trips around the world. Curator Virginie Chardin’s essay traces Weiss’s life and work, while the text by the artistic director of the Casa dei Tre Oci, Denis Curti, analyses Weiss’s experience in the light of a comparison between French humanist photography and Italian neo-realism. The catalogue also includes an appendix with an up-to-date biography of the photographer, accompanied by illustrations of historical documents and magazines, together with a selection of solo and group exhibitions and an accurate bibliography of the artist.
