At the turn of 1978-1981, Sophie Calle secretly explored room 501 of the then disused Grand Hotel d’Orsay, painstakingly documenting the objects inside on the trail of Mr Oddo, the building’s mysterious handyman, like a sort of detective in search of clues.

Invited by the curator of the Musée d’Orsay to return to the building to continue its exploration at the height of the pandemic, the author wanders through the absolute desolation of the corridors armed with flashbulbs to reconstruct, with the help of the writings of French archaeologist Jean-Paul Demoule, an ambiguous story somewhere between reality and fiction in which the lives of strangers are intertwined with mysterious clues and the recurring presence of the ghost of Mr Oddo.
