Following violent clashes between youths and municipal police in Switzerland’s largest city during the summer of 1968, the city council, in consultation with the state council, decided to purchase four modern water cannons, two each for the municipal and cantonal police. However, in doing so, the city council exceeded its authority and overrode the city council. In an already politically heated atmosphere, the purchase immediately turned into a scandal and became the subject of media controversy. In the spring of 1969, journalists Robert Naef and Peter Fasler of the popular Sie und Er magazine wanted to take advantage of readers’ great interest in this story. Together with photographer Eric Bachmann, the two reporters went to the cantonal police station in Wädenswil and stood directly in the line of fire of the water cannon, thus producing the impressive photographs in this book, which are now made public in their entirety for the first time.
