‘The Tract Houses’ explores anonymous American suburbia with formal rigor tending toward abstraction, placing Baltz among the leading exponents of the New Topographics movement (which included Robert Adams, Stephen Shore and Henry Wessel, among others), the American counterpart of the Düsseldorf School of the Bechers.
Inspired by the Minimalist current, Baltz renders the alienation of a landscape teeming with prefabricated dwellings that sprang up like mushrooms in the 1960s and 1970s; as Adam D. Weinberg (at the time of the volume’s publication one of the directors of the Whitney Museum of American Art) argues in the introductory essay: Baltz’s images “demand more than mere contemplation and delight of the eye: they demand careful consideration and reflection.”
