Unlike classic photography history textbooks, in which white, Western men appear as the main protagonists, “The World History of Women Photographers” explores an alternative to this up to now dominant narrative.

The sequence of the book is structured chronologically, starting with the beginnings of the photographic medium and ending with the present day; the works of 300 female photographers from all over the world are presented, including Helen Levitt, Carrie Mae Weems, Hannah Höch, Sarah Moon, Eve Arnold and Shirin Neshat.

To amalgamate the multiple aspects of this global body of works, rich in diversity and variety, authors Luce Lebart, curator and photography historian, and Marie Robert, chief curator of the Musée d’Orsay, invited 160 international female writers to contribute essays to this bold and beautifully illustrated manifesto of photography.
