In 1996, the rock band ‘The Afghan Whigs’ released the album ‘Black Love’, a musical work that changed the lives of many loyal followers of the group. The well-known legend that the record would be accompanied by a film never came true, leaving devotees to wonder what the visual accompaniment might have been like. ‘There Is No Light at the End of the Tunnel Because the Tunnel Is Made of Light’ is Ryan Spencer’s personal rendering of this mythical film (which never was) in book form. Using stills from neo-noir films set in Los Angeles that could exist as scenes from the imaginary moving picture, and thanks to a profound knowledge and appreciation for period photography and cinema, the artist stitches together a straightforward narrative from the song titles and linear narratives of ‘The Afghan Whigs’ epic record. Rebecca Bengal’s fictional essay is the benchmark for the book’s stylised and physical ‘pulp’ qualities.
