In The North Fork, Trent Davis Bailey looks at a remote river valley in western Colorado. Originally from Colorado, the artist was drawn to the vastness of his home state, its rich agricultural history and the assorted characters that inhabit the western slope. He was particularly curious about his extended family living there – an aunt, uncle and cousins – whom he had not seen in almost 20 years. Describing his childhood memories, he says: “They lived in a big tent at the foot of a mountain. Their backyard had three ponds and a garden where they grew their own food. Beyond was a dense forest of oak and juniper trees where I imagined coyotes, black bears and mountain lions hid. Bailey marvelled at the world of his cousins, but due to a quarrel between his father and uncle, he visited North Fork only a few times as a child. In 2011, Bailey returned to the valley and for the next seven years used photography to piece together his experience with North Fork and its inhabitants. In due course, he not only found his extended family, but rekindled ties with them, building his place within the local community. Then one fateful day, while searching for mushrooms, he met his current wife by whom he has two children. Overall, the photographs in this book are informed by that background, but they also go far beyond it: evoking their own associations of place, food, kinship and wonder.
