Seven pairs means fourteen. I try to browse and count through Jochen Lempert’s photographs but I cannot find that number anywhere. It is an inevitable and at the same time impossible quest. It seems like a trick, almost a joke the artist wants to play on us to force us to look for something. On the other hand, it is Lempert himself who combines a scientific approach to his observation of reality. With the rigour of a mathematician, he chooses and classifies his subjects – plants, animals and natural phenomena – but what emerges is no longer his empirical knowledge but a poetic view of the world. Why make us count if in front of his photographs we forget numbers and types and only notice the elegant simplicity of the relationship between nature and man?

From the text by Sarah Cosulich, curator of Lempert’s first solo exhibition in Italy, of which this precious booklet is the catalogue.
