White Fence offers a visual journey through Graciela Iturbide’s travels, with never-before-seen images retrieved from her archive, iconography and documents. On 2 May 1986, images were captured that resulted in the book A Day in the Life of America. Graciela Iturbide was part of the team of photographers who, over a period of twenty-four hours, recorded daily life in different locations in the United States. Her contribution was a portrait taken in a flat in the Boyle Heights neighbourhood of East Los Angeles. There she was greeted by a group of Mexican Americans, mostly deaf women with ties to the White Fence gang.

This two-volume edition offers a selection of the portraits Iturbide took of the Mexican community, their surroundings and connections. The work is accompanied by an essay by Alfonso Morales Carrillo describing the development of the photographic series and the historical context of the community north of the Rio Grande.
