Between 2000 and 2006, photographer Joakim Eskildsen and poet/writer Cia Rinne travelled to meet Roma in seven different countries often staying with families for long periods. The Roma Journeys is a very personal document of these encounters, giving a contemporary view of the lives of the Roma people and their situation.
We are told: “Throughout their history, the Roma have been subjected to persecution, expulsions across Europe, slavery in Romania, prohibition on the use of the Romany language, and other creative attempts to misuse, assimilate or extinguish their people. Many Roma still have to deal with discrimination on various levels, and in all European countries, the general attitude towards them is at least suspicious.”
This beautiful work is a celebration of life – through Roma people. Each chapter is introduced by b&w panoramas introducing color photographs. Texts by Cia Rinne. The book is accompanied by a CD rom with field and music recordings along the journey. Foreword by Günter Grass
